Description: 1931 Newport Rhode Island Service Society Admiral Byrd Honorary Membership on Cloth Fabric (May 9, 1931) It reads:Newport Service Society of Newport, Rhode Island.This is to certify that Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd U.S.N. (ret.) is an Honorary Member of this Society for life.Issued May 9, 1931 on the occasion of his visit to Newport, and the sixth anniversary of his flight to the North Pole.(signed) President and Mayor of Newport, Mortimer A. Sullivan(signed) Recording Secretary Charles E. Smith (I cannot read the signature clearly but it appears to read Charles E. Smith) I purchased this item at a 'one-of-a-kind' auction (as stated in the newspaper article) of Admiral Byrd items/artifacts at the Colonial Country Club in Lynnfield, Massachusetts in October 1988. I saved the article from the newspaper as seen in several pictures above (will include a photocopy of that article). I also found an article online from The Jewish Herald, Providence, Rhode Island, dated May 1, 1931 (Page 8) announcing "ADMIRAL BYRD TO BE FETED" on May 9, 1931. In the short article, it listed Mortimer Sullivan as part of the reception committee (he signed the framed cloth membership). The Newport Tower (Old Stone Mill) emblem is on the cloth. The cloth is puckered in the frame and appears to have had some moisture (see pictures). Not sure if it was framed before or after the moisture. I did not attempt to remove the item from the frame. The frame measures about 12-3/4" x 11-3/4". The color of the pictures above may vary from computer to computer but the first two pictures seem to be close to the right hue. It was framed by John M. Wiseman, Gilder and Picture Framer, Newport, Rhode Island. Nice historical item owned by Admiral Byrd. Any questions, please contact me.
