1934 American Olympic Legends in Paris Visit Athletic Official medal

Description: Shipping from Europe with tracking number/ to Daniel J. Ferris, Longtime Leader In Amateur US AthleticsMr. Ferris joined the Amateur Athletic Union in 1907 as secretary to James E. Sullivan, the president, and was appointed‐secretary‐treasurer in 1927, a position he held until his retirement in 1957.His ‘reluctance to say anything in the face taf controversy often induced critics to chide him as indifferent and lacking in sensitivity. Others who knew him contended that he preferred to be silent rather than to deceive. Mr. Ferris's memory was impeccable on fads as far back as the 1912 Olympics. A fellow office worker once informed him of the’ death of a former amateur official, Pete White. “He was the last man to beat me in a sprint,” Mr. Ferris said instantly, referring to an event that took place 65 years before.Mt: Ferris played high‐sc,hool football, hockey and baseball in rawling, N.Y., where he was born on a rarm July, 7 1889. He gained recognition as a sprinter between 1909 and 1914, during the period he became secretary to the late Mr. Sulk‐I van, “then president of the American” Sports. Publishing Company and the A.A.U.In 1912 he attended his first Olympics in Stockholm. He was as known to officials in the Olympic movement as Avery Brundage, but was more liked. He was perhaps the American liked best by foreigners associated with international athletics.Mr. Ferris attended every Olympics through 1972, getting out of a sick bed in 1956 in Melbourne, Australia, to atten the closing ceremonies. As the United States representative on several international federations, he visited 41 foreign countries. But he was more closely linked to controversies at home, from lawsuits filed by Wes Santee, the miler, to a $1 million suit filed by a California gymnastics coach who had been accused of homosexuality.
