Horace Stanley McCoy (1897-1955) was an American writer whose mostly hardboiled stories took place during the Great Depression. His best known novel is They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, which was made into a movie of the same name in 1969, fourteen years after McCoy's death. McCoy was born in Pegram, Tennessee, and during WWI, he served in the US Army Air Corps. He was wounded in battle and received the Croix de Guerre for heroism from the government of France. McCoy moved to Hollywood, CA and appeared in a short "The Hollywood Handicap" in 1932. He worked a number of odd jobs, including washing cars, picking lettuce in the Imperial Valley, and serving as a bouncer at a Santa Monica pier. The bouncer job inspired this novel, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? which chronicles a Depression-era dance marathon. As a screen-writer, McCoy wrote westerns, crime melodramas, and other films for various studios. His other novels include: No Pockets in a Shroud (1937), I Should Have Stayed Home (1938), Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye (1948), Scalpel (1952), and Corruption City (completed by a ghostwriter and published posthumously in 1959). This is a first edition, second printing with the original dust jacket. Rare. Able to be read. RAREA1935AMOBHK329
