1939 Press Photo Stanford University officials discuss earthquake studies

Description:   Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. This vintage photograph is offered for sale as a collectible item and conveys no transfer of copyright. 1939 Press Photo Stanford University officials discuss earthquake studies Stanford University, California - The earthquake which shook the Southern California coastal plain on March 10, 1933, is being re-enacted on a minute scale in the vibration laboratory of the Stanford Engineering School. Two metal disks, about the size of phonograph records, but with irregular, wavy edges, are the mechanisms used for making artificial earthquakes. One disk, or "eccentric cam," shakes a small-scale model of a building with north-and-south vibrations, the other with east-and-west vibrations. Together, the cams reproduce the ground motion to the scale-model building. Thus they give measurements of what actually happened when some houses, apartments, schools, stores and office structures tumbled down. Professor Lydik S. Jacobsen of the Stanford Mechanical Engineering Department is conducting the scale tests in collaboration with Professor R.R. Martel of California Institute of Technology, under an earthquake grant made to Caltech by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. In June the two engineers expect to present their findings for the guidance of the Los Angeles supervisors in formulations building codes and in designing county and municipal buildings. Photo shows: the Long Beach earthquake of six years ago is literally preserved on the steel disk held by Professor Lydik S. Jacobsen, who is discussing the use of the cam in artificial earthquake studies with Dean Samuel B. Morris (left), of the Stanford Engineering School. Irregular edge of the cam accurately transmits jarring vibrations like those of the earthquake to the model in left foreground, on which quake stresses are measured. Photo measures 7 x 9 inches. Photo Is dated 1939.   PHOTO FRONT PHOTO BACK Historic Images Part Number: nei39490 FAQsQ: Can I just download a digital version instead?A: No, we sell only vintage originals and do not make or distribute any copies, including digital ones. Q: Do you combine shipping and invoices? A: Multiple photos won on the same seller ID combine automatically through the eBay checkout process. If you encounter problems with this, send us a message via eBay messaging and we will send you an invoice. Due to eBay limitations, we cannot combine items won on our different seller IDs for a single shipping charge. Q: How quickly do you ship the items once paid? A: We ship within one business day after your payment clears. If you do not receive an "order shipped" email from us by the close of the second business day from submitting payment, please e-mail us via eBay messaging. Q: How do you make sure my photograph arrives safely? A: We package each order between two cross-corrugated pieces of cardboard to ensure that the package is as difficult to bend as possible. We then wrap each order in a plastic sheet to help protect against moisture. We want you to rest assured that we take every precaution to ensure that the photograph you receive will be in the same condition in your care as it was in ours. Q: Will the "Historic Images" watermark be on my photo when I receive it? A: No. This is a digital watermark we use to protect our images. It is not printed on the photo. Q: What are your office hours? A: eBay for us is a business, and a very fun one to be in! We are open M-F 9 to 5 (CST). Therefore, we do not return e-mails and phone calls over the weekend. We observe the following holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Q: Where did all these vintage photos come from? A: These original vintage photographs are from various news service and newspaper photo archives from locations around the country including: Boston, Detroit, Tampa, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Portland, Spokane, and more. We do not copy or reproduce any photographs -- every item is a unique vintage piece that was housed in a news archive. Q: Can I use this photograph in my book/blog/website? A: The short answer is no. There is no transfer of copyright for republication or reproduction with these photographs when you purchase them, and only photographs taken before 1923 are currently automatically in the public domain. Permission from the copyright holder, which usually can be identified from the back of each photo, must be sought to republish or reproduce the image for any purpose. Q: Do you relist items (in case I miss an auction ending)? A: Auction items that receive no bids are relisted in our store (historicimages-store on eBay) as a fixed-price item and at a higher price than the starting auction price. Q: Do you leave feedback? A: Yes, we always leave feedback for buyers. Our software monitors when our buyers leave us feedback, then notifies us that we can leave feedback for the buyer. Rest assured, if you leave feedback, we will do the same!
