Description: Intriguing Mid Century 1940s World War II era (1944) architectural themed watercolor painting and more specifically a view of the Home Economics building at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, now Mary E. Gearing Hall. Mary Etna Gearing Although UT (University Texas) was coeducational from its founding in 1883, (white) women’s education differed from that of men. The women’s campus included a focus on domestic education, in the form of the “Home Economics” School and building, as were the norms and expectations of the times. Opened in 1933, the University renamed the building in 1976 after Mary E Gearing. She was the founder of the School of Domestic Economy, later named Home Economics, and today the School of Human Ecology. She was also the first woman to hold the ranks of professor and department chairman at the University of Texas. The building served as the gateway to and anchor for the “Women’s campus” as designed by early architects Herbert Greene and Paul Cret. Its interior, vestiges of which still remain, was suggestive of a domestic environment paying tribute to women’s roles in Texas history. Pencil inscription on verso reads ‘Home Eco bldg from South’. Well done with pleasing brushstrokes and good capture of light and shadow. Medium is watercolor on textured paper done in a Modernist Impressionist style. Signed and dated by the artist ‘J.R.
