Description: Title: Young Edgar Allan Poe Author: Laura Benet Publisher: Dodd Mead & Company (1941) Description:Scarce, First edition of a book that is difficult to find in any edition. As an important FYI - Another seller has copied my photo & is fraudulently representing my book as theirs and DOES NOT POSSESS this copy and ebay does nothing about it. A great find for the Poe collector. Book is written for young adult audience but as with many books of this type should be entertaining for adults as well. Children 80 years ago were a lot brighter than we can imagine. From the front flap of the book:In her delightfully distinguished biographies of Jenny Lind and Percy Bysshe Shelley, Laura Benét has adhered to the actual known facts in telling about the boyhood and young manhood of Edgar Allan Poe. And yet, because she is a poet herself, with a poet's bright imagination and sensitive ability to interpret — plus an unexpectedly keen sense of humor — she inevitably weaves these facts into a fascinatingstory. It is strange and absorbing history, this tale of the small son of an actress taken into the house of a well-to-do Virginia merchant, spoiled and petted through the early years, then thrust out to shift for himself because of the lack of harmony between himself and his factual foster-father. The incidents of Poe's life are striking in their contrasts — the comfortable home in Richmond, with the adoring negro servants who carried the round-eyed, impressionable little fellow to their evening gatherings in some firelit shadowy cabin for the singing and recounting of their unrestrainedly emotional songs and stories; the constant tender solicitude of Edgar's lovely foster-mother; and the initial pride of his foster-father who would show off his sturdy small son at dinner parties; the long ocean voyage to England and the amusing visits with relatives in Scotland, where the mischievous American boy created quite a stirabout; the expensive clothes and entertainments of that young Richmond dandy, Edgar Allan Poe; the one extravagant year of college — and over against all this, the misunderstandings, the pain and poverty. Yet the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe was unconquerable! Laura Benét says: “The book was planned because I believed that such a gifted and imaginative American boy would be a fascinating subject for other young Americans, especially would-be writers. They will no doubt agree with me that in spite of Edgar’s nervous temperament and difficulties of disposition, he exhibited pluck and courage. He had two books of poems to his credit by the time he was twenty and one must remember that the only money he ever earned in his lifetime (with the exception of army pay) was earned by his pen.” For older boys and girls. About Laura Benét from the flapLaura Benét was born at Fort Hamilton, New York, attended the Emma Willard School and Vassar College, and now lives in a delightful old town in Pennsylvania. Some have writing thrust upon them. With two distinguished brothers in the field, Stephen Benét and William Rose Benét, Laura Benét at first decided to be a social worker and spent four active yearswith the Spring Street Settlement. Later, however, as reviewer and editorial assistant, she wrote for two New York newspapers. Since then she has devoted herself to her own work—the several volumes of poems for which. she has become widely known, including Noah's Dove and Basket For a Fair, and her first book for younger readers, THE BOY SHELLEY, that sensitive and distinguished interpretation of a growing poet which has been acclaimed as the "most beautiful biography about youth." THE HIDDEN VALLEY, her new book, is quite different—a stirring adventure tale, finely told, of a white boy and an Indian boy in the Yosemite Valley. Laura Benét has chosen her favorite background for thisbook. She loves being out of doors, and after a solid morning of writing from nine to one she is apt to be off across country, walking, riding or climbing. In the evenings she likes to read aloud Condition:Book is Near Fine with almost no wear, Red cloth covers in great condition with gilt titles still bright. Hinges tight. Corners very good plus. We may upgrade your package at our discretion to USPS Ground Advantage. Package will be shipped within 4 business days after payment - usually faster. The USPS can be notoriously slow, it could take 2-3 weeks for delivery. Please take that into account when leaving feedback, that we will ship quickly, but the USPS can take a long time to deliver, and we have no control over delivery time. Why Shipping Costs Are What They Are: eBay users may note that postal rates increased AGAIN on July 14, 2024. That's EIGHT price hikes in 4 years. This was the largest single price increase ever: 10% on media mail. USPS shipping is getting expensive, but eBay also charges sellers 15% on the shipping cost (+ the taxes), in addition to the actual package shipping cost. That fact and the USPS business model has made shipping prices rise quite a bit since 2019. In 2019 a one pound package sent via media mail cost $2.75. Today it is 68% more to send the same package. This is all part of the bi-annual price increases starting in 2020 & the misguided USPS 10 Year Plan - “Delivering For America,” implemented in 2021 which twice per year, every year until 2030 will keep increasing rates, while the USPS continues to lose billions of dollars. Combined Shipping if you Buy or Win Multiple Auctions Multiple book/media auction wins will qualify for combined shipping when possible. Do not pay until auctions you are bidding on are complete. Sales Tax: If your state has sales tax, it is collected by eBay & then paid to your state tax authority. Sellers do not make money from this but are charged a percentage by eBay on the total sale including tax – insane, but true. Returns No returns. We describe all items conservatively. However, If there is a problem, message us through eBay messages to let us know what the issue is before contacting eBay or initiating a return or leaving feedback and we will work it out. We want satisfied customers. Feedback: After you receive your item and are satisfied, please leave positive feedback and after you do we will reciprocate.
