Indexed. ---------- A guide to North American wild flowers, including common wayside flowers often passed over in books of this kind. Some, such as the Butturbur on page 228, are described as " rare ." Author Mabel Colebrooke Carey ( 1892 - 1971 ) worked for the Girl Guides Association, the Junior Book Club, and book publisher J. M. Dent & Sons. Girl Guides was, and still is, the British version of Girl Scouts. Carey authored several books. As Henry Svenson explains in the introduction, most of the wild flowers described and illustrated in this book were carried to North America by ships in the colonial era, and are of European origin ( especially Great Britain ). Wooden ships of the 1600s and 1700s sailing to America from Europe routinely used earth as ballast, and often some of that ballast was discarded on American shores before the return voyage was made. The discarded earth, plain dirt, contained seeds of wild flowers. Seeds traveled from Europe to America by other means as well, such as having been caught in the hair of livestock, particularly in the wool of sheep. Finding favorable conditions, the seeds sprouted, becoming plant settlers in the New World. Illustrated with 269 illustrations, entirely in color, by Dorothy Fitchew (1889-1975), an English illustrator, landscape and figure painter. The flowers are grouped in the book by color; white, greenish-white, greenish yellow , yellow, blue, red, pink, purple. Indexed at the rear of the book. ------------- Condition. Binding wear. The cloth is blotchy, possibly from rain-drops when this book was carried outdoors in rainy weather.
