Description: 1960s PERIOD PHOTOGRAPH OF BULLET BILL ANDERS CARRIED ON APOLLO 8 GIFTED TO WALT This 1960s original photograph of astronaut William Anders' Apollo space-flown bullet encased in wood and plexiglass held by a man named Walt ("a real craftsman") is certainly a mystery The photo shows wear consistent with 50 plus years of age (see photos) A NASA researcher confirmed Anders did carry some number of .45 caliber bullets on his Apollo 8 voyage by checking records of his Personal Preference Kit (PPK) Unfortunately, even though this period photograph was originally signed by astronaut Bill Anders to Walt, it is a copy, a very old copy The consensus is that the photograph is probably from the 1960s Case reads: Flown on Apollo VIII - First Lunar Flight Dec. 21-27, 1968 - Inscription reads: To Walt, A Real Craftsman, Bill Anders, Apollo 8 Walt's connection to Anders is unknown - did he manufacture the wooden case for the bullet for Anders? Why would Anders sign the photograph to Walt? It remains a mystery The photograph was evaluated by recognized space autograph expert Steve Zarelli of Zarelli Space Authentication, LLC In relaying the bad news to me, Mr Zarelli wrote saying: "Regrettably, your item did not pass authentication. The signature is "part of the photo,"... it is not hand signed / live ink. In other words, it is a reproduction of a signed photo. It is somewhat puzzling how or why this pose was selected to make a printed facsimile, but it is undoubtedly not hand signed in my opinion. I examined it under 50x magnification and with blue UV light. There is no evidence of live ink, indentation or any difference in the surface sheen. Pure speculation, but possibly the bullet manufacturer who "Walt" worked for made reproductions."When I first discovered and purchased this photograph in an obviously old protective hardboard folder (which will be included; see photo) in a batch of dusty boxes from an abandoned storage container near Edwards Air Force Base, I hoped it would be an original signature of William Anders but on whole it is still a very interesting old period original photographic artifact with a puzzle to solve.Shipped quickly and very carefully the day payment is received
