Description: c.1960s Original Vietnam-Era U.S. Navy Steel Recruiting Sign Two-Sided / by Artist Lou Nolan 41" Tall x 30" WideRAD 66307 / RAD 66308 [ FEATURES & DETAILS... ]This is an original TWO-SIDED 1960s Vietnam-Era heavy steel recruiting sign, which was typically displayed outside a U.S. Navy recruitment office. As pointed out in the picture, there are four tiny factory holes, two at the top and two at the bottom of the sign, which is where it would be attached to a frame for display outside the recruitment office. One side is marked "RAD 66307," and the other, "RAD 66308." Those are the U.S. Navy Recruiting Aid Device (RAD) inventory numbers for the two images. It is a metal version of two paper posters that were created by artist Lou Nolan in the 1960s: Sail with the Bold Ones, and Command the Bold Ones. You can see Nolan's signature on both sides of the sign. The ship depicted is the supercarrier USS Saratoga, CV-60. Lou Nolan designed numerous posters for the U.S. Navy, and he went on to illustrate more than two dozen U.S. postage stamps. A gorgeous piece of history! [ CONDITION... ] - Nicely preserved, from a non-smoking environment.- The chief issue you need to be aware of is some black paint that appears to the left of the aircraft carrier. It seems to be some sort of spray paint, and could probably be removed, if desired, by someone who knows what he is doing and won't damage the sign in the process. (That would not be me.) This piece has been priced accordingly. - Other than that, typical soiling, remnants of a couple of paper tags, small scratches (such as near the officer's nose), and dings from years of storage and handling. This sign is actually in much better condition than most of the examples I've owned or seen elsewhere. - The white spots at the left and right of the aircraft carrier are actually glare from lighting in the room. They are not on the sign. The above is my good-faith attempt to disclose all noteworthy issues. Keep in mind that vintage/antique items always show their age. (Don't we all!?) It would be impossible to mention every tiny detail, so please expect that there will be something about this item (or lot) that's not perfect and may need touch-up.
