The Sixth Annual Old Dominion 500 was held at Martinsville Speedway on September 24, 1961. A crowd of 18,000 would watch the 29-car field take the green with Fred Lorenzen as the pole sitter. Joe Weatherly would pass Rex White on lap 418 and hold off White despite running out of gas on the final lap. Following White were Junior Johnson, Fireball Roberts, and Ken Rush.
