Description: Handsome fold-out color lithographed 1961 road map of the United States, printed more than 63 years ago. It pens to 19" x 25" and is drawn on a scale of 1:7,603,200 or 120 miles to the inch. It shows work in progress on the Interstate Highway System, as well as old numbered roads such as U.S. Route 66, and it labels the Atlantic Missile Range, eastward from Cape Canaveral over the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic Missile Range was renamed the Eastern Test Range in 1964, three years after this map was printed. Other details principal airports, cities, towns, national parks, natural features, missile tracking stations, elevations in feet, and soundings in fathoms. There are inset plans of Hawaii and Alaska. The map was published by the National Geographic Society in July 1961 and is dated in the legend. Condition: It is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no rips, tears, or writing.
