1964 Press Photo Construction Work at Aswan Dam in Egypt on Nile River

Description:   Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. This vintage photograph is offered for sale as a collectible item and conveys no transfer of copyright. 1964 Press Photo Construction Work at Aswan Dam in Egypt on Nile River This is an original press photo. Aswan Dam, Egypt. Twenty-five thousand men are working around-the-clock, to complete the important first stage of the new Aswan High Dam project. By May 15th, the diversion canal will be opened. The Nile waters will be under control to permit progress on other stages of the High Dam construction, due for completion by 1970. Three years in the building, its purpose is to harness the waters of the Nile, create a massive reservoir three hundred miles long, provide irrigation and water supply sufficient to expand cultivable land by two million acres. The Aswan High Dam is being built in five stages and is actually three dams in one. The first problem that faced the builders was construction of the diversionary canal on the east bank which will carry the Nile while the High Dam takes form. This phase has taken a Herculean effort due to 300 tons of pressure per cubic centimeter encountered when cutting into the solid granite rock. By comparison, concrete offers only three and a half tons of pressure. This will be the first permanent diversion of a major river by man, although inscriptions on the walls and tombs of the Pharaohs reveal that engineers of King Mena diverted the Nile sixty centuries ago to build the city of Menf in the Delta. In all its aspects, the Aswan High Dam project involves total costs of around $1,200,000,000. (a billion, two hundred million dollars). Not only is the multipurpose Aswan High Dam intended to insure the nation against periodic flood disaster, or equally damaging water shortages in dry spells, but it also provides for the installation of a hydro-electric plant with a potential capacity of 10-billion kilowatt hours of power. New industries at Aswan will have an inexpensive supply of power, and long lines will carry electricity to the major cities of Cairo and Alexandria. When it is finished, the rock-filled dam will rise to a height of about 380 feet, above the bed of the Nile River, and will have an overall length of three miles. Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated 05-19-1964.   PHOTO FRONT PHOTO BACK Historic Images Part Number: pix27032 FAQsQ: Can I just download a digital version instead?A: No, we sell only vintage originals and do not make or distribute any copies, including digital ones.
