Douglas Aircraft Company's new short-to-medium-range DC-9 jetliner lifts off the runway at Long Beach (California) Municipal Airport today in its maiden flight, a month ahead of schedule. The DC-9 carried 10,000 pounds of instrumentation and flew at altitudes of 10,000 and 20,000 feet before landing at Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert. Powered by two JT8D-5 turbofan jet engines located on the aft fuselage in front of the "T" tail, the DC-9 is 104.4 feet long and has a wing span of 87.4 feet. It can carry from 56 to 90 passengers at a cruising speed of 569 miles an hour and will provide economical and reliable service to cities 100 to 1500 miles apart. To date, 121 orders and options for the DC-9 have been received from United States and overseas airlines. The short-to-medium-range jet will enter commercial service early next year.
