Undated, this type was issued between 1966 and 1992. Guyana was known as “British” Guiana during its Colonial period under British rule. The British took control of the region in 1796 and formally established the Colony of British Guiana in 1831 by uniting the areas of Demerara, Berbice, and Essequibo. British Guiana remained a British colony until it gained independence on May 26, 1966.
