Description: This is an original 1967 Charlatans/13th Floor Elevators Avalon Ballroom poster. Created by one of the Haight-Ashbury Big Three poster artists, Rick Griffin (1944-1991). The Charlatans were a legendary Haight-Ashbury band, but oddly were never signed to a record deal. Some credit them with starting the Haight-Ashbury style with the Red Dog Saloon in Nevada. They would dress in Edwardian/Wild Western fashions and play some variety of psychedelic blues. The opening band was the 13th Floor Elevators from Austin, Texas. The 13th Floor Elevators were Roky Erickson's band. Erickson is generally considered one of the acid casualties of that era, spending years in Texas mental asylums. The Avalon Ballroom was one of two big music venues during the Summer of Love. The other was the Fillmore, run by the famous impresario Bill Graham. The short-lived Avalon Ballroom was run by Graham's rival, Chet Helms. Helms was the Texas hippie who imported Janis Joplin to San Francisco. He would sometimes greet Avalon attendees with the phrase, "Welcome to our church". Unfortunately, Helms had zero business sense, and the Avalon quickly went out of business. Poster dimensions: 21-3/4'' x 13-5/8". This poster was originally a triptych of three posters. This is the middle of the three that has "RLA" of "CHARLATANS". The one to the left had CHA on the top. The one to the right had TANS on the top. It is in very good condition, but does have thumbtack holes on the top edge. It's been stored rolled. It will be shipped in a cardboard tube.
