Description: 1985 Press Photo Blackfeet Indian Dolls Made by Mrs. Red Crow on Display This is an original press photo. New Orleans Museum of Art - Pair of Dolls, Mrs. Red Crow, Blackfeet, 1920s, Leather, cloth, beads, rawhide, ermine, human hair, steel bone; These dolls were made by an elderly woman as replicas of a pair she had received in childhood from her grandmother. Details of clothing, hairdress, and weapons conform exactly to those of the prereservation 1870s period. Like their full-scale counterparts, the man's shield has a removable leather cover, his sheath holds a miniature bone-and-steel knife, and the woman's pouch holds diatomaceous earth used by Indians to clean soft leather. The Blackfeet call such figures "real dolls," meaning they were of the highest quality and therefore betokened great esteem for the child to whom they were given.
