Boasting high-quality card stock, anti-counterfeiting holograms and a then-unheard-of $1.00 per pack price tag, the set ushered in a new era for baseball cards and the rest of the hobby. 1989 Upper Deck Baseball Set Details The 800-card 1989 Upper Deck Baseball set has two series. Low Number Series includes the first 700 cards. High Number Series covers the final 100 cards, which were released later in the season. However, High Series packs have cards from both sets. The Star Rookies subset kicks off the landmark set with 26 cards. Among them is the iconic Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card. Other notable Star Rookies options include Randy Johnson, John Smoltz and Gary Sheffield. The Sheffield card has two versions. An error variation has SS upside-down on the front. Sheffield isn't the only error in the set. The most notable is card 357, Dale Murphy. His reverse negative card is one of the most popular and valuable errors of the era. Thick white borders hold together the 1989 Upper Deck Baseball design. The right side of the card mimics the first baseline. This theme was continued with the borders for a couple more years to show progression around the field and add continuity between sets. One of the major upgrades this set brought to the hobby was the crisp photography. No previous set went to such great lengths to ensure that strong photographs were used throughout a checklist. Card backs feature a second full-color photo to compliment the stats box. Besides separate 36-pack boxes for both the Low Series and High Series, complete 800-card factory sets are also available.
