Description: For sale is a Good to acceptable condition hardcover two volume set of Arctic Explorations: The Second Grinnell Expedition, in Search of Sir John Franklin, 1853, '54, '55 by Elisha Kent Kane. Illustrated by upwards of three hundred engravings, from sketches by the author. Both volumes are illustrated with black and white plates and 1 fold-out map each. (Map from Vol 1 has become detached and comes inlaid). 1st Editions, published in 1856 by Childs & Peterson in Philadelphia. Bindings are still holding sound, although covers open easily. Pages are unmarked, with the exception of a stamp and the previous owner's name written on one of the first blank pages of volume 1. The pages of both volumes have age toning and spotting/staining. Covers are clean. The green hardboards of volume 1 have light scuffing around the edges as well as some minor fraying and chipping at the top and bottom of the spine. Volume 2 has scuffing and fraying around the edges and at the corners as well as chipping at the top at bottom edges of the spine. Please see photos for condition detail. Shelf Reference #L-1469
