While they are referred to as ‘Golden Dollars”, there is no gold in these coins and are a pure copper core with an outer layer made of 77% copper, 12 % zinc, 7% manganese, and 4% nickel. With the beginning of the 2012 issues, they continued to be minted but in reduced production numbers for collector use only in order to reduce the stockpile.
