3 James Fenimore Cooper Classics 1863-4 Scarce Illustrated Hardcover Set

Description: DESCRIPTION The Last of the Mohicans The Prairie The Pioneers An early set of three Leatherstocking Tales by the classic American novelist James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851). The Pioneers has a unique dedication addressed “to the American People” from the publishers. All three books are in textured and debossed brown cloth covers with beveled edges on the boards and bright gilt text and decoration. Hard to find such early copies as a set and in decent shape. The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 [1864, 443 pages] The Prairie: A Tale [1863, 479 pages] The Pioneers: The Sources of the Susquehanna, A Descriptive Tale [1863, 505 pages] CONDITION Good Plus condition. The covers have very slight toning, moderate wear and moderately bumped corners to varying degrees. Textblock edges have moderate, typical toning. Some foxing of the frontispieces caused by the tissue papers. The Prairie has an approx. 2 in. paper stain on two pages from a newspaper chip that was probably used as a bookmark. A few pages noted with minor edgewear, appears to be due to the cutting of leaf pairs that were uncut in production. Also, a few scattered light moisture stains, spots, and small tears, but all comparatively minor. Owner’s inscription in pencil on the free endpapers (looks like Gussie M. Price) dated Christmas 1864 (a gift?). No other markings noted; the pages are clean. The gilt is bright and in good condition. Except for these moderate issues typical of 160 year old books, overall they are in very decent shape. See photos.
