Description: Maker and age: England's iconic firm Spode produced this remarkably beautiful set of 4 antique cups and saucers. The handwritten brown Spode mark on two saucers and one cup dates their production to before 1833. That year, the firm was taken over by W.T. Copeland and Thomas Garrett, and 3 cups have a red handwritten mark "C&G" Copeland and Garrett mark that dates to around 1835. Two saucers have a Copeland & Garrett Late Spodes Felspar mark that was in use from 1833 to 1847, when the company name changed to W.T. Copeland & Sons. Source: the potteries.org. Design: All 8 pieces have the handwritten pattern number 4779. It's a richly gold encrusted design of grapes and leaves against a pure white and dark red background. No other examples of this pattern were found in an online search. Condition: All 8 pieces are in excellent condition for their age and fragile material, with no marks, nicks, chips, cracks, stains, discoloration or repairs. There is wear to the design on the saucers and to the gold on the cup handles - it's visible in the photos. Size: The saucers are 6 inches wide and 1 inch tall. The cups are 3 5/8 inches wide and 2 3/8 inches tall. The set weighs 2 pounds 11 ounces. Please check all the photos very carefully - they are an important part of the description.
