Description: ORIGINAL ANTIQUE ALBUMEN - set of 4 photographs by FRATELLI ALINARI, circa 1890. In 1852, Leopoldo Alinari founded a photographic studio. His brothers Giuseppe and Romualdo joined him two years later to establish Fratelli Alinari Fotografi Editori, a photographic workshop dedicated initially to the documentation of notable Italian paintings, sculptures, and architecture. They subsequently expanded the scope of their photographic project to include the towns and landscapes of Italy, as well as portrait photography and images of national costume. The brothers achieved recognition for the quality of their work, and by 1860 their portrait subjects included the Italian royal family. An albumen print was made by coating thin paper with a layer of egg-white (albumen) containing salt and sensitized with a silver nitrate solution, then printed using daylight under a negative. The resulting paper had a smooth surface with a fine sheen. Each photogtaph measures 25 x 20 cm and are in excellent condition for antique photographs. They are: Pouzzuli - Avanzi del Tempio creduto di Serapide, No. 11426Tivoli - Prov. Di Roma. Veduta generale delle Cascatelle, No. 6874Pesto - Tempio di Nettuno, No. 11329Milano - Basilica di S. Ambrogio. La Porta Maggiore (Adam Magister), No. 14151 The photographs are stored, and will be sold in, an archival plastic sleeve that is coated on the outside to retard the harmful effect of ultraviolet light with the inside layer made from an untreated material to ensure the sleeve is completely acid free.
