Description: 4 PV Peasant Village #2466 Yellowware Individual Stoneware Casseroles w Lids We are pleased to offer this lot of 4 lovely two handled individual stoneware casseroles with lids marked PV 2466. The PV initials stand for Peasant Village - the name used by importer Mittledorfer Strauss of New York. This company is noted for selling French yellowware. They produced a Yellow Ware Duck on Nest PV 2318 that is very popular with collectors today. These baking dishes make perfect bean pots and bowls for French onion soup and chili. They are marked with an impressed/incised PV 2466 on the bottoms. They have a matte cream colored exterior with glazed interior. Their chocolate brown covers are also glazed. This treatment is the same as found on some American Watt and Red Wing Pottery wares. These baking dishes stand about 2-3/8" tall and measure just under 5" wide from tab handle to tab handle. All four are in excellent condition with no nicks, chips or cracks. Just lovely piece of vintage French stoneware that you are sure to want to add to your collection. Thanks for viewing our sale. This mark {circled PV) belonged to the New York based import firm of Mittledorfer-Strauss, which was active from the 1920's to the 1970's. The letters P.V. stands for 'Peasant Village'. Unfortunately, not all Peasant village pieces are marked with the impressed seal or drawn mark. Peasant Village pieces were made in several countries, including France, Italy, and even in the U.S. Mittledofer used the PV logo beginning in 1928 and I believe they continued to use it through the 1960's. These marked pieces can only be identified as to the importer. There is never an indication of who actually produced the items.
