Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus WINTER / COLD HARDY IN BUFFALO NY Succulent Plant

Description: This listing is for Three (3) Thornless Cuttings / Pads. THOUSANDS of pads sold so far to very happy Customers! Super Cold Hardy Variety! These Cacti easily survived the winter of 2015 - Coldest February in Buffalo History!Planting Instructions at bottom of pagePlease read the entire listing before purchasing This listing is for the Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus. Each buyer will receive 2 (two) unrooted cactus pads of various size and length. In the winter and spring, these pads will be dormant and look similar to the winter pictures in my listing. Once the cactus pads are established and growing in their new home (following the instructions below), they will bloom as pictured in the summer. Shipped cactus pads will not be blooming (Be patient - The blooms are worth the wait!) Dormant Cactus Pads If you order your cactus pads in the winter or early spring, please keep in mind that your cactus pads are still dormant. They will appear to be dehydrated in their dormant state. They may also be discolored and wrinkled depending on the time of year that they are purchased. Don't worry, they are very much alive and have not rotted! Every set of pads are inspected, packaged and shipped by myself. When you receive your cactus, they will be in the same alive and viable condition as when they were when they were shipped. (Reference the winter pictures in my listing). If you are purchasing these cactus pads for warm climates in the United States, they will only go into a mild hibernation during the winter and will not shrivel and discolor like they do in the northern states during the winter months. This is truly a very unique plant! When you receive your unrooted cactus pads, please be careful when opening the package. Follow the detailed instructions at the bottom of this page. If you do not want to purchase dormant cactus, you can wait for summer months. Just keep in mind I usually sell out by mid to late May every year. These cactus pads are very resilient and will adapt readily to their new home. On rare occasions, a pad may die after being planted. This is very uncommon! Please keep in mind that I will guarantee and replace any pad that happens to die for whatever reason as long as they were planted as per the directions listed below and given a reasonable amount of time to adapt to their new environment. If you have any questions before or after purchasing, please contact me via the eBay message forum or at my email listed below. I will answer EVERYONE who contacts me! Once your cactus are planted and established, you may actually get some cactus blooms during your first summer. Your cactus blooms will appear in mid summer on pads that developed the previous year. During the first years planting, your newly planted cactus pads will be doing their best to make new pads so they can establish your new cactus colony. They will occasionally push out a few blooms during their first year. By the second year, they will be prolific bloomers with multiple clusters of blooms! Please continue to read below. There are over 200 species of prickly pear cacti. Most are found in southwestern North America, Mexico, Central America and South America. This particular Succulent subspecies however is extremely cold hardy and thrives here in suburban Buffalo NY. These will grow and thrive from as far north as northern Minnesota, Canada, and even Alaska to as far south as Florida and Texas (or even farther south). All the pictures listed are from my own garden. As you can see, this particular subspecies as a prolific bloomer. Within just a couple of years, just a few pad cuttings will spread and colonize into a beautiful cluster of pads with hundreds of beautiful yellow flowers with orange centers. The more pads you buy, the quicker you will have a garden full of these cactus pads and blooms. Blooms appear right around the 4th of July! Their only requirement is full sun with well draining soil. (partial shade OK but full sun is best). These are both drought and moisture tolerant so they can be in a rainy area or dry area. This variety is the spineless variety. It is cold hardy to USDA Zone 3 (or maybe even 2)! This subspecies has been hardened to withstand the coldest winters Buffalo can dish out. To the best of my knowledge, this cactus can handle extreme sub freezing temperatures as low as minus 35 degrees Fahrenheit (-37.2 degrees Celsius). These Cacti can (and do) live and thrive in parts of Alaska! All parts of these cacti are edible; the pads, prickly pear fruit and even the blooms! You can even make jelly from the prickly pear fruit (known as Tunas)! The best thing about these cacti? Once these cactus root and get established, they are practically maintenance free! In the wild, these plants are listed as Endangered, Rare or Exploitably Vulnerable in most of the northeastern US. http://www.buffalorising.com/2012/09/a-cactus-grows-in-buffalo.html Dormancy In the late fall - early winter, these cacti go dormant. In cold climates, they shrivel turning a purplish color and appear dead (but they are not!). It is natures way of preserving the cacti. They extract most of the water from the pad and they have their own internal natural anti-freeze which keeps the cacti alive. Come spring, they rehydrate, turn green and grow with their stunning summer blooms! Planting Just place 1/3 to 1/2 of the pad in the ground in a sunny location, They will root within a few weeks and you will soon see some growth budding on the pad. You may also get a bloom or two this year. Please note - despite the fact that these are the spineless variety, they do have tiny glochids (tiny, finely barbed hair-like spines) that stick in your skin. When planting, handle the cacti with garden gloves, tongs or a pair of pliers to keep your skin from contacting the glochids.Lisa's Sunrise Thorned Variety I also have a second far more scarce Cold Hardy "Thorned Variety" - "Lisa's Sunrise". Please read below for full description. "Lisa's Sunrise" Cactus are the Last 3 pictures (Pics 10-12) in the picture gallery" Lisa's Sunrise Cold Hardy Opuntia is covered with white thorns / spines / bristles. The flowers are very similar to the thornless variety, however Lisa's Sunrise has pure yellow flowers. This variety also thrives here in Buffalo NY. Lisa's Sunrise does not bloom as prolific as the thornless variety and is slower to spread, however the pads grow larger and are very attractive with beautiful white bristles. The pure yellow flowers of Lisa's Sunrise are absolutely stunning! If you want the "Lisa's Sunrise" Cold Hardy Thorned Opuntia, Please check out my other listing! Additional pictures of either variety are available upon request at SunriseSaloon at AOL.comOpuntia humifusa 'Inermis', commonly known as the Eastern Prickly Pear, Indian Fig, Beaver Tail, Devil's Tongue or Nopal Verde cactus (nopalina) , is a native cactus found in most of eastern North America. It ranges from Montana eastward to southern Ontario Canada and then on to Massachusetts, south to Florida and westward to New Mexico. The green stems of this low-growing perennial cactus are flattened and are formed of segments; barbed bristles are found around the surfaces of the segments. The flowers are yellow to gold in color and are found along the margins of mature segments. The flowers are waxy and sometimes have red centers. They measure 4-6 cm wide and bloom in the late spring. The juicy and edible red fruits measure from 3-5 cm. As the fruit matures, it changes colour from green to red, and often remains on the cactus until the following spring. There are 6 to 33 small, flat, light-colored seeds in each fruit. This plant is very intolerant of shade. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Some botanists treat this cactus as a variety Opuntia compressa var. humifusa, or a synonym of Opuntia compressa. Those recognizing this species treat Opuntia rafinesquii as a junior synonym.Planting Instructions;Your Cactus is dormant now but should be ok to put in the ground as instructed below. As they come out of dormancy, they will root at the same time. PLEASE - DO NOT TOUCH THE PADS WITH YOUR BARE HANDS AND BE CAREFUL WHEN OPENING THE PACKAGE. They have tiny little needle like bee stingers (glochids) that irritate your skin. I recommend dumping them on the ground and handling them with pliers or tongues - and a trowel to make a wedge in the soil. They are very tough plants and you will not hurt them. Their only requirement is good drainage and full sun. They will grow in all kinds of soil. The only thing that will kill them is shade or an occasional deer that will take a bite out of the pad. If a pad gets munched, any part of the pad left will root and regenerate as long as it is touching soil. If Any pads are slightly yellowed, it simply mean they were shadowed by other pads growing over them. They should quickly green up once they receive full sun again. Planting, Place 1/3 to 1/2 of a part of the pad (any part actually but I recommend the cut end) into the soil. they should root within 2 weeks if kept watered. Once rooted, these are practically maintenance free being drought resistant / yet being able to handle lots of rain (as long as soil drains). Spread them out. They will multiply! Weeding around / between pads is not recommended unless you have a good pair of gardening gloves that cover past your wrists. If you try and weed without them, you will get their very tiny (nearly invisible) "stingers" in your skin. A very simple solution is Roundup. You can selectively spray weeds and grasses that come up between pads with Roundup. The waxy skin of the cactus protects them from the Roundup. These cactus are really hard to kill. Winter. These cacti will shrivel and turn purple (in cold climates). They will look terrible and appear dead. They are simply dormant and will re hydrate and turn green in the spring. * I recommend planting them ASAP so the pads can acclimate to their new home and continue to develop. Here in Buffalo, they bloom right around July 4th.Key Words Trump Obama Impeach Biden Harris AOC gay lgbtq Clinton impeachment collusion t shirt joke russia korea maga border ice valentines Easter thanksgiving jewelry Christmas birthday gift anniversary gold silver diamond ruby Cold hardy / hardiness Paddles Nopales outdoor outdoors compressa color outside garden soil flower flowers flowering bulb bulbs fall spring tulip tulips Narcissus daffodil organic vegetable hummingbird hummingbirds feeder ontario canada niagara falls zone zones 4 5 6 7 8 9 tree shrub plant animal pet livestock farm food feed tortoise turtle sea ocean tropical exotic palm palms citrus tree shrub elvis Software, Books, Music, Flowers Computer Hardware, Consumer Electronics, Office Supplies Apparel, Footwear, Jewelry, Linens / Home Decor Health, Beauty, Food and Beverage Toys, Video Games, Sporting Goods Small Appliances, Furniture, Tools, Garden Equipment gifts airline ticket ALABAMA AL ARIZONA AZ ARKANSAS AR CALIFORNIA CA COLORADO CO CONNECTICUT CT DELAWARE DE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA DC FLORIDA FL GEORGIA GA IDAHO ID ILLINOIS IL INDIANA IN IOWA IA KANSAS KS KENTUCKY KY LOUISIANA LA MAINE ME MARYLAND MD MASSACHUSETTS MA MICHIGAN MI MINNESOTA MN MISSISSIPPI MS MISSOURI MO MONTANA MT NEBRASKA NE NEVADA NV NEW HAMPSHIRE NH NEW JERSEY NJ NEW MEXICO NM NEW YORK NY NORTH CAROLINA NC NORTH DAKOTA ND OHIO OH OKLAHOMA OK OREGON OR PENNSYLVANIA PA RHODE ISLAND RI SOUTH CAROLINA SC SOUTH DAKOTA SD TENNESSEE TN TEXAS TX UTAH UT VERMONT VT VIRGINIA VA WASHINGTON WA WEST VIRGINIA WV WISCONSIN WI WYOMING WY Terms of Sale We only accept PayPal.
