Description: Up for auction is this $5.00 Series 1896 Silver Certificate, otherwise referred to as a $5.00 Educational Note. This note features the obverse vignette “Electricity Presenting Light to the World”, and was engraved by G.F.C. Smillie, from a painting by Walter Shirlaw. The reverse vignette features the bust of Ulysses S. Grant on the left and Philip Sheridan on the right. Both were Union Army Generals during the Civil War. Grant naturally went on to become the 18th President of the United States serving in office from March 4,1869 to March 4, 1877. Lorenzo J. Hatch engraved the portraits of both Generals, and G.F.C. Smillie engraved the remainder of the design elements found on the back of the note. The $5.00 Series 1896 Educational Note is considered by many to be the “Most Beautiful” United States Banknote that was ever produced! It garners the interest of Both Paper Money Collectors and Non Collectors as a note they covet to own! This note has good color and contrast for the grade along with nice centering and margins. There is a minor repair in the top margin at the center. I see 10 tiny pinholes scattered across the note. I have marked the repair and pinholes in orange. I would grade this note as a Choice Fine or a bit better. Please look at the scans carefully and judge the grade and quality of this note for yourself before bidding. This note should appeal to the budget minded collector, who wants to own an affordable example of this design without spending $3,500 for a similar problem free example.
