The tale goes that he bought a small toy bear for his wife after seeing it left alone on the shelves of Selfridges one evening. He named him Paddington after the train station close to his home. Paddington Bear inspired Bond to put pen to paper and write stories about the bear’s life - taking inspiration from his own childhood memories. "Michael grew up in Reading during the Second World War where his parents opened their home to young children evacuated from London. He recalls some Jewish children who sat in front of the fire crying one evening because they had no idea what had happened to their parents - such events helped inspire the story of Paddington. "It starts in the jungle of Peru, where Paddington’s peaceful home is destroyed by a huge fire and his Aunt Lucy who looks after him is put into a home for ‘retired bears’. With nothing left and nowhere to go, Aunt Lucy sends Paddington on a difficult journey to London in the hope of a better life. All he has with him is a suitcase and a note that reads: “Please look after this bear. Thank you.” But when Paddington arrives, London is not as welcoming as he had expected. He is ignored by almost everyone he meets until the kind Brown family offers him a place to stay. Once settled with the Brown family, the story follows Paddington’s adventures in the city - from his adventures on Portobello Road to eating marmalade at every opportunity he gets. He goes on to become a universally loved character, treasured by his optimism, sense of fair play and perfect manners - the perfect ingredients for a teddy bear companion!" A fine addition for your bookshelf!Condition: Several of the books have a former owner's impressed seal in the front, a little age-toning to the pages, otherwise all are in very good condition with solid bindings and clean pages. Note: The letter/number at the end of the title line for this listing is just an inventory code for locating the book.ShippingFree Domestic Economy Shipping!Check out my other items!Be sure to add me to your favorites list!About Us:Rivendell Antiquarian Books sells used rare, vintage and collectable books predominantly from pre 1970. Be assured that we want your experience with Rivendell Antiquarian Books to be enjoyable and problem free. We believe that it is a travesty to simply throw away a used book when there is little or nothing wrong with it - we believe in giving each book the chance of finding a new home. We appreciate the impact a good book can have. We know the excitement of a new page turner, or the familiar joy of an old favorite, and we find satisfaction in putting older, and often scarce books in the hands of people who have the same love for old books that we do.Customer Service:Rivendell Antiquarian Books is committed to ensuring each customer is entirely satisfied with their puchase and our service. If you have any issues or concerns please contact us and we will be more than happy to help. Our books have been inspected carefully by hand by experienced book valuers to ensure the condition description is as accurate as possible for this exact copy pictured. If you have questions about the book before or after purchasing, please feel free to contact us!Packaging:We take pride in packaging our books for safe delivery, and if you check our feedback, you will see this reflected in the comments of many pleased customers. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery: We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
