70's VTG Postmodern Original Art "Blue Diamond" ~ James Yoko (1916

Description: 70s postmodernism> Art marker on paper, entitled "Blue Diamond" by well-listed Ohio artist James Yoko (1916-2004). All-Ohio Graphics and Photography Biennial Exhibition -1977 as noted on the back, along with the Dayton Art Institute year and catalogue number from the large collection James and his wife donated to the them in 2003. Yoko was born in Youngstown, Ohio and was awarded a scholarship to the Dayton Art Institute where he earned a BA in Fine Arts. He continued his education by taking post-graduate courses with John King. His work has been shown in New York, Pennsylvania, Miami Valley Cooperative Gallery, Dayton Art Institute, Rutledge Gallery, and Antioch College amongst others. Over the decades he has acquired an ardent niche following of his work that continued to evolve with the changing times. "James Yoko's work reveals a consistent engagement with the styles, subject matter and materials of contemporary art throughout his career." - DAI This piece was acquired from a Columbus OH estate. The moment we saw it, we called it a Winnicott Squiggle aka the "Winnicott Squiggle Technique" which actually correlates with the same time period. Imagine our surprise, and feelings of validation, when we discovered James Yoko's "Still Life with Yellow Vase" is actually used in a tutorial associated with award winning author, Andrew Larsen's book entitled "A Squiggly Story". Which naturally led us to wonder more about Yoko's inspirations/ stories, and if maybe he went through a period of "artist block" despite his being quite prolific.... "Blue Diamond" measures appx 17.5" t x 14.5"w, this does not include the art board it is matted on. We think it's a striking piece whose condition is rather irrelevant though we understand that is subjective...
