Description: A sweet 7½” Simon & Halbig (S&H) all bisque mignonette doll offered by Snowdrift Antiques.Simon & Halbig produced small all-bisque dolls as early as the late 1870s but most were made from the late 1880s into the early 1900s. The 886 mold came in several small sizes with the 7½” appearing to be the most popular and commonly found. The shoe and sock styles also varied over the years with the 5 strap bootine becoming the most desirable among collectors today. This Simon & Halbig mignonette is mold 886 with the harder to find 5-strap bootines. She has a perfect bisque head with blue sleep eyes, well painted eyelashes and eyebrows, an open mouth with 4 teeth, lovely blushed cheeks, and nicely painted lips. The back of her head she is marked 886 up by the rim and below that, S 3 H. She retains her original blond wig; it is no longer glued to her head. Her sleep eyes open and close easily, note that the wax over the left eye pupil has worn off, see image 11. This is not noticeable when she is standing with her eyes open. Her all bisque body with jointed arms and legs is in excellent condition, I did not find any restorations but there is a very slight nick to the bisque in the neck socket in back, see image 6; it may have been a factory flaw given that it is under the kid leather neck socket liner. The bisque has a nice rosy tint. The elastic is a bit loose after all these years and the arm elastic may have been replaced years ago. She has painted over the knee black stockings and brown 5-strap bootines with low heels and molded bows. The coolest thing is that she retains her Au Nain Bleu Paris label on her belly indicating she was produced for the French market. She wears a pretty pale pink and white check silk taffeta dress with lace trim at the collar and arm holes. The bodice is lined in white cotton batiste. The pink silk ribbon at her waist is fraying in back and at the bow on her left hip. She also has a white cotton chemise and white cotton bloomers with lace trim for underclothes. Her hat is made of gathered lace and pink silk ribbon; the ribbon ties are quite frayed. This doll is from a private collection housed in a smoke-free home.Overall, a lovely example of a desirable S&H mignonette doll that would be a wonderful addition to any collection.A convenient 3 month layaway plan is available upon request.
