Gedvilas Lithuanian Artist Woodcarver Hand Carved Wood Sculptor 23" Plaque of AlgirdasAlgirdas (born c. 1296—died 1377) was the grand duke of Lithuania from 1345 to 1377, who made Lithuania one of the largest European states of his day. His son Jogaila became Władysław II Jagiełło, king of united Poland and Lithuania.Algirdas was one of the sons of the country’s ruler, Gediminas, and he began his long political career when he married, at his father’s request, the daughter of the prince of Vitebsk and succeeded to the prince’s lands. Together with his father he fought against the Teutonic Knights and attempted to subjugate the Russian territories of Novgorod and Pskov, which had sought Lithuanian protection both from the knights and from the Golden Horde (the Tatar overlords of Russia since the middle of the 13th century). From 1341 to 1345 he was prince of Krevo and Vitebsk and a vassal of his younger brother, Grand Duke Jaunutis, whom he removed in collusion with another brother, Kęstutis, with whose consent he became grand duke. Lithuanian woodcarving is a traditional craft and art form that has been practiced for centuries in Lithuania. One of the contemporary woodcarvers who has contributed to the revival of this art is A. Gedvilas. He has created 22 works that are part of a collection of 128 wood carvings by 14 Lithuanian sculptors, donated to the Lithuanian Museum of Art in Lemont, Illinois. His sculptures are expressive and often depict religious or folkloric themes, such as angels, saints, crosses, and animals. He uses various techniques and tools to carve the wood, such as chisels, knives, gouges, and saws. He is one of the representatives of the sacred wood movement, which aims to preserve and promote the spiritual and cultural values of Lithuanian woodcarving.
