Manuscript copy of newspaper article that was pasted in to the Author's own copy of the book. Contemporary brown calf, panelled spine, red and gilt title panel and gilt decoration to spine. Gilt decoration to foredge of boards. Large folding map. Engraved plate. Errata leaf. Epigraph. Three leaves of manuscript laid in. Chipping to junction of upper board and backstrip with loss, chipping to base of backstrip, joint of backstrip and upper board starting, but holding firm. Corners bumped. Calf well preserved. Ffep detached but present. Binding firm. Foxing to prelims. Folding map, with a couple of marginal tears without loss, bright and attractive. Salmon-Leap plate in very good unfoxed condition. Internally clean and bright with no markings. Overall, in very good condition. A very nice unrestored example of a scarce title. The inlaid manuscript copies a newspaper article about Ballyshannon from 1801, which was tipped in to Twiss's own copy of the book. The copy is dated 1895. The article recounts how the salmon-leap was ' swelled to an amazing height ' by ' the very unusual fall of rain this season '. One wonders how heavy the rainfall must have been to be noted as unusual in Donegal. Twiss lived until 1821, so can be supposed to have tipped in the original article himself. He was certainly much taken with the salmon-leap, saying in the book that the Giant's Causeway was ' scarcely worthy of going so far to see ' but in contrast ' the salmon-leap at Ballyshannon is a scene of such a singular nature, as is not to be found elsewhere, and is as peculiar to Ireland as the bullfights are to Spain '. A pleasing association copy.
