Due to construction works taking place at the MCG, 1991 saw the grand final take place at VFL Park as Hawthorn defeated West Coast Eagles, running rampant in the final quarter to secure the win. The Eagles would recover the following season, become the first non-Victorian team to win a premiership in 1992, defeating Geelong by 28-points at the MCG. A young Essendon side, dubbed the baby Bombers would win the flag in 1993, before West Coast Eagles secured themselves a second premiership in three seasons in 1994. The 1996 grand final marked the culmination of the AFL/VFLs 100th season and having defeated Sydney Swans, North Melbourne were awarded a gold premiership cup instead of the usual silver in honour of the centenary grand final.
