Description: Agricole Louis Montagne(1879-1960)Original Oil/Canvas/Vue Amsterdam/ 36 x 24 A Stunning Impressionistic oil painting on canvas measuring 36 x 24 in. (91.5 x 61 cm) entitled "Une Vue d'Amsterdam" and signed lower left "L.Montagne" (Agricole-Louis Montagne French, Avignon 1879 - Paris 1960)in fine condition in a custom gilt wood frame and ready to hang The French artist Agricole-Louis Montagne is a well listed and noted painter of mostly landscape and cityscapes in his beloved Paris. His style was predominantly Impressionist but with a tighter post-impressionist grain and the artist is well represented in both public and private collections throughout Europe and the Americas, with his oil paintings appearing fairly regularly at auction in the range of $15,000 to $1,000 depending on subject and size. It is however rare to find from his brush a canvas devoted entirely to a large foreign city - and the impressive canvas "Une Vue d'Amsterdam" is just such a painting. Vue d'Amsterdam swirls with life and energy, filled with working barges, pedestrian traffic on the Amstel river where it meets the Singel canal in the busy grachtengordel neighborhood with a turbulent sky above and choppy waters below. The 15th century Munttoren stands like a lighthouse on the right of this vibrant city piercing the grey skies like a beacon of hope. Montagne has captured both the central pulse and elan of this lowlands city. We know that Montagne greatly admired the 17th century Dutch landscape artists before him and this may well be his tribute to them. Montagne had a long and distinguished career in the fine arts. In 1900 he collaborated with artist Paul Sain in the decoration of the restaurant Le Train Bleu of the Gare de Lyon, Paris. He exhibited in Paris at the Salon d'Automne in 1901, and was declared out of competition in 1911 which earned him a travel scholarship. It may have been then that the young Montagne first laid eyes on Amsterdam. Montagne was named a Knight of the Legion D'Honneur and was made an officer in 1932. Montagne lived in Paris for many years and in the village of Angles at Pontmartin Castle. He was a member of the Group of Thirteen and the new group of regional artists. And he was appointed director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Avignon, the city of his birth from 1920 to 1928 and then curator of the Museum of Villeneuve-les-Avignon. Montagne's commissions ranged far and wide throughout France but mostly in the regions of Paris and Avignon. He also illustrated twenty watercolors for a book by Andre Hallays published in Avignon and depicting 750 of 1178 characters. Montagne's work is in the permanent collections of many a public museum in France and the rest of Europe and in several museums throughout the Americas. His work is today highly sought after and the city scape of Amsterdam we offer, in fine collectible condition, will make a handsome and discriminating acquisition to any museum or private collector today!
