Ladrey, Passage des Princes, Paris Title: Ensemble de L’Hotel de Ville Date: 1871 Medium: Albumen print on printed mount Size of Image: 5 7/8 x 9 1/8 inches Size of Mount: 11 ¼ x 13 3/8 inches Condition: Rich tonal image, sharp and clean, small abrasion in sky at left, mount shows very light soiling. Other: View the l’Hotel de Ville across the Seine River in ruins following its destruction by fire during the Franco-Prussian War. The Paris Commune maintained their headquarters there at which time while under attack they set fire to the building. Only the shell of the hotel remained. It was rebuilt between 1873 and 1892. The building at the left of the image also shows damage as well. Ernest Alexander Ladrey was active in Paris as early as 1862 producing portraits and views of the region until the 1880s. In the late 1870’s he acquired the Paris studio of Disderi during one of the photographers several bad times. Some images from this time period may carry the Ladry-Disderi name with Ladrey having several different studio address in Paris. Send questions.
