Short History of Cathy Richardson She was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in Falls Church, Virginia, where her love for art and nature took root at an early age. She spent much of my time drawing and painting, exploring the woods near our home, helping her mother in her gardens and greenhouses, and wandering beaches along the Chesapeake Bay while my father fished. These experiences sparked a lifelong passion for both art and the natural world.Though she chose to pursue a career in geology, earning a BA, MA, and PhD, art remained close to my heart. When research funding diminished in the 1980s, she returned to her first love—art—and launched a stained glass business. Her work drew heavily on nature, capturing scenes of flowers, prairie grasses, trees, birds, sea creatures, and people. She was inspired by the flowing, organic lines of Art Nouveau artists like Alphonse Mucha, as well as the intricate borders of old books and manuscripts. Many of her stained glass panels and paintings incorporated detailed borders that framed the naturalistic scenes within.During this time, she was also influenced by the abstract naturalism of Georgia O’Keeffe, the gentle beauty of the Impressionists, and the sense of light and realism in the work of 20th-century photographers, particularly Ansel Adams. Throughout her artistic journey, she had maintained a fascination with small details and the interplay of light, color, and textures. In her current work, she strive to depict natural settings in a way that feels both authentic and artistically composed, inviting viewers to explore her miniature worlds in greater detail. She met her husband at Boston University in 1967, and they married in 1971. Over the years, She watched him grow into a dedicated geology professor, an excellent teacher, and eventually the director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Iowa State University. He later served as associate provost at Bowling Green State University and vice president at Winona State University before retiring to work alongside her in their studio. Today, he helps with bookkeeping, website management, polishing and grinding paperweights, packing and shipping orders, and generally assisting wherever needed. They have two children: a daughter, Meredith, who works for Fidelity in Raleigh, NC, and is married with two boys. Their son, Colin, is happily married and lives in Minneapolis, MN. He has been worked with her in the studio for several years and has since established his own studio to continue his career in glass.
