Description: This is a Knowles pottery covered jug (also syrup dispenser or syrup pitcher). It was likely made ca 1870's-80's based on the history of iron stone chinawares produced by the company in that period. This piece has 2 sets of marks: embossed over & around the backside of the lid, PAT JULY 16. (18) 72 VICTORIA; and at the bottom, the spread eagle in the center of a sheriff's star, Iron Stone China Knowles, Taylor and Knowles. This is a rare decorated piece: a sprig of a single-petaled rose defines the front. Condition: the pottery body is intact no chips or cracks; the edges of the lid is slightly warped or indented. and a little wobbly on the hinge. It is app 8" high up to the tip of lid and 3 1/2" wide around the squat belly.
