It was located at the conjunction of the Spice Trade routes, the Silk Road and the Persian Royal Road, and its economy grew rapidly. It was considered a ‘free city’, a title that Julius Caesar confirmed in 47 BC. It had a large Jewish population and attracted the earliest missionaries: Barnabas and Paul. This Antioch should not be confused with Antioch in Pisidia, which Paul visited later. The city was referred to as the ‘Cradle of Christianity’. A terrible earthquake in 526 followed by a Sassanian attack 12 years later destroyed the city. It was rebuilt by the Byzantines and conquered by Arabs at the Battle of Iron Bridge in 637 and was renamed Antakiyyah. It found itself on the front line of skirmishes between the Arabs and Byzantines for the next 350 years. The Crusaders conquered the city in 1098 and the city again became a battleground throughout the Crusades until it eventually fell to the Mongols in 1260. The city eventually fell into disuse and then ruins.Syria (al Jumnuriya al Arabiyah) was the most ancient city on earth dating back to 10,000 BC. It was occupied by Phoenicians and Arameans who were associated with the Sea Peoples. It was ruled by the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Hittites and Persians, and then fell to Alexander who passed it to the Seleucids. In 83 BC it fell to Tigranes the Great of Armenia & became a Roman Province in 64 BC. Antioch became capital (the Athens of the East). Paul was converted on the Road to Damascus & the 1st organized Christian Church was founded in Antioch. Syria fell to Khusraw II in 616 and then fell to the Byzantines in 637 before finally falling to the Muslims in 638. The Byzantines launched a string of attacks under John Tzimski who completely overran the city, but later in the 11th century the Seljuk Turks took it back. Syria was shattered by the Mongols in the 13th and 14th centuries and then was held by the Ottomans from the 16th to the 20th centuries. After WWI the country was split between the United Kingdom and Palestine, but was then occupied by French troops. Syria negotiated a treaty of independence, but France refused to ratify it. When France fell in WWII, Syria came under the control of the Vichy Government. It was ruled autocratically from 1970-2000 and today it faces an ongoing Syrian uprising.Important events in the year 88 BC: Consulship of Rufus and Sulla; Roman Social War ends as Italian allies are defeated by Sulla who takes Rome by force; Marius leads 1st Roman Civil War but is defeated by Sulla and flees to Africa; Macedonia is attacked by Dardani, Scordisci and Maedi; Mithradates VI attacks Greece and conquers Bithynia, Phrygia, Mysia, Lycia, Pamphylia, Ionia and Cappadocia; Asia dismantled and 150,000 Italians are put to death; Deaths: Rufus, Mithradates II of Parthia
