Description: Antique 1800s Iron & Pierced Tin Phoebe Grease Lamps (2) It has a unique and highly decorative Folk Art cut work and engraved pattern on both stems of opposite facing birds -likely of a Pennsylvania Dutch origin. The smaller oil cup is hooked into the larger oil cup by an arm and can be separated into 2 pieces. Overall dimensions are 9 1/2” tall (12 1/2” tall with the spike. The oil cup is 4”x3”. Excellent condition with minimal rust. The smaller is an Antique 1800s Wrought Iron Double Cruse Grease Lamp. The smaller cup is hooked by an iron disc that has a notch and hooks onto the larger oil cup by an adjustable iron arm. It can be separated into 2 pieces. Overall dimensions 6 1/2” tall with 5” spike. The cup is 4”x 2”. Spike is connected via a rat tail end of a handmade nail. This type of early lighting was fueled by whale oil or grease. A twisted cloth wick was laid in the narrow channel of the upper pan which held oil or grease. The lower pan collected drips from the burning wick, stopped mess, and possibly saved some fuel for re-use. A notched piece allowed adjustment of the two pans.
