Description: This is an antique plate made by Booths Ltd, England, as part of the Silicon China range. It was made for Waring & Gillow who fitted out liners and luxury yachts. It has a registered number that was used between 1908 and 1909 and an impressed Booths mark. It measures approximately 28cm x 25cm in diameter. Silicon China was a name given to an improved, thin & lightweight earthenware body created by Booths. It was used in the catering markets - hotels, sea liners and railways. This trade name was used from 1906 onwards.Throughout their history Waring & Gillow secured contracts for a number of luxury yachts and liners. These included the interior fittings of HM Alberta (1901) after Queen Victoria's death, the royal steam yacht Victoria and Albert III, the interior of the Princesse Alice (1895) for Prince Albert of Monaco, the Lysistrata (1901) for James Gordon Bennett, the P&O liner, the Viceroy of India (1929), and the Queen Mary (1936). Like other prestigious retailers of the Victorian era, Waring & Gillow also secured furnishing contracts for a number of new luxury hotels that were being constructed in London. These included the Carlton Hotel, the Waldorf and the Ritz.
