Description: Rare Antique Vintage Brass Moustache (Mustache) Cup The moustache (or mustache) cup is a drinking cup with a semicircular ledge inside. The ledge, called a moustache guard, has a half moon-shaped opening to allow the passage of liquids and serves as a guard to keep moustaches dry. It is generally acknowledged to have invented in the 1870s Moustaches flourished throughout the Victorian era, and by the early 20th century the British Army required soldiers to grow a moustache. Often, moustache was ws to the moustache to keep it stiff. When drinking hot liquids, steam from the drink would melt the was, which would drip into the cup. Sipping hot tea or cofffee would also often stain moustaches Moustache cups are highly collectable and fun to find Purchased from an estate, this mustache cup is in good antique pre-owned conditionThe handle is very strongly welded and the lid is a tight fit. It is 3" wide and 3" high with an added 1/2" for the spout and 1" for the handle Originally, I think it had a silver finish (the inside of the cup is silver). We did not try to clean it - it has a lovely patina as is and we didn't want to ruin it's value Comes from a smoke-free & pet-free environment
