Description: Gorgeous Napoleon era to Louis-Philippe era French burl wood case, etui - c.1800-1830 carrying case, quite unique and filled completely with Palais Royal mother of pearl sewing tools, needle case (18k trim & shield cartouche) scissors in fine form, a spool (missing 2nd spool), stiletto (18k collar) and a mother of pearl bodkin or needle. Thimble is solid 18k gold and is in fine form. All in remarkably fine condition, right down to the old original silk satin pad to protect the sewing tools which has been attached to the interior lid, lightly, and could be removed and a mirror returned to the inner lid (currently not there). Definitely one of the famed Palais Royal sets - those sold through the opulently stocked boutiques flanking the garden promenade of the old Cardinal Richelieu Palace. This one is beautiful closed or open for display. Full measurements are noted on the photos. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, not a break among all the mother of pearl tools, including those impossibly fragile scissors. The bodkin (string threader 'needle') is mother of pearl, nicely carved. The case is very fine, thick burl wood rather than a veneer, and no cracks or chips. Mother of pearl cartouche in place, but the escutcheon is no longer there (around the keyhole). Push-button and hinges are fine. I will point out that beneath the scissors handle is a recess which now holds a period mother of pearl silk winder, the other of an original pair missing, 18k gold trim on the crochet tambour, but there is not a hook inside. Silk velvet and satin lining is in remarkably fine condition. Fabulous set!
