Antique German Lithograph Silhouette Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach/B G Teubner. Framed

Description: This listing is for our fabulous illustration by Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach (1851-1913) - B G Teubner (c1919) for Per Aspera ad Astra, which translates from Latin to “through hardship to the stars”. The background is cream with the black silhouette. German painter and social reformer Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach embraced an alternative lifestyle in which he attempted to live life in harmony with nature, rejected monogomy, embraced the naturist and peace movements, questioned traditional religions and became a vegetarian. He lived much of his life in communes of like-minded people and became a guru for many who made pilgrimages to meet him. This silhouette formed part of a panorama consisting of 34 images. It can be seen in the images at the right hand corner of the print are the initials “BGT”, which is B G Teubner (c1919). We purchased this picture about 15 years ago because we loved the almost animated style of the silhouettes as if they were actually dancing through a field. The silhouettes have so much fine detail which makes it so expressive. As can be seen, the print does not have a mount and so the bottom of it does not meet the edge of the frame, it was purchased exactly like this and we did not want to remove the print so hung as is. We are only selling following our downsized house move and sadly it no longer has a place. The frame overall is 28cm x 42.5cm and 25mm thick. It is made from oak and has had repairs to the right hand strip that appears to have been also glued to the glass. The glass is intact with no chips or cracks. The print measures 17cm x 32.5 cm and overall is in good condition. There appears to be a 'smudge' of some sort near the top right hand corner and without removing the glass it is not possible to tell if this is on the glass or the print. We absolutely love this picture and honestly feel that this mark does not detract from its beauty. Please look at the images in detail as they form part of the description.
