Description: A fabulous antique Japanese Edo Kyoto ware porcelain kinrande floral sake cup by Eiraku Hozen, dating to circa 1850. According to the estate, this fabulous Japanese sake cup was purchased in Japan between 1958-1962 by a diplomat stationed in Tokyo. Eiraku Hozen (1795-1854) was one of 'The Three Famous Potters of Kyoto' and became the 11th generation in the Eiraku Zengoro lineage. A true master of his trade, he was adopted by Ryozan and from 1827 they worked in the private kiln Kairakuen in Wakayama. He spent his lifetime perfecting the kinrande style of gold on a red ground with under glaze cobalt blue, a style popular in the Ming dynasty. One of the most influential ceramicists of 19th century Kyoto his pieces are held in many collections across the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum. This little sake cup is an absolute masterpiece with a huge amount of work packed into a small area. It has a classic footed-bowl form with an intricate scalloped gold gilt lip, the outside is decorated in gold over red with wonderful flowers and clouds suspended in scrolling floral vines, the inside with further gold and red flowers, clouds and vines along with a central cobalt blue floral medallion at the base. The underside is signed in under-glaze cobalt blue 'Dai Nippon Eiraku Tsukuru' (Great Japan Eiraku Made). The sake cup measures approximately 2 1/8 inches (5.4cm) across and is about 1 3/32 inches (2.8cm) high. The sake cup is in great condition with general light wear to the gilt. There is a tiny pinprick glaze frit to the inside of the lip, otherwise the cup has no further chips, cracks or repairs. Please check all the pictures. However, if we are not certain about the age of an item we will either not mention an age or say the item is being sold as a later or modern piece and then leave it up to more experienced buyers to determine the exact age. Items are not returnable if it was not of the age/value you were hoping it to be with no exceptions. If we place a date on an item we guarantee it to be of that period or earlier. If you require further pictures or more information about an item, please let us know prior to bidding or purchase. Items cannot be returned for any condition issues either shown in the pictures or mentioned in the listing. As many items we sell are one hundred years or older we will not accept returns for wear consistent with the item's age.
