Description: Here is an antique hand drawn memorial picture for John Howard Payne. It measures 27 1/2" by 23 3/4". NOTE: The frame shows scratching and wear. There is some staining on the edges of the paper. "John Howard Payne was born June 9, 1791. He was not destined to enjoy the pleasures of home, for his father being unfortunate in business, he had to leave college and earn his living by the aid of his pen. About the year 1823, after a disastrous sojourn in London, Payne drifted to Paris. In a garret on the topmost story of a house he took up his abode, and during one of these seasons, with its attendant despair and dejection, in that meanly furnished room, listening to some music played in a house near by, with the sounds of the happy, thoughtless crowds on the boulevard below, welling up through the tiny casement, the opening words of the immortal song 'Mid Pleasures and Palaces' came to him as spontaneously as a sigh, and then and there he wrote the words that have since girdled the world, and Payne tells himself some time after, on a Christmas Eve, in a London street, he stood penniless. ? and cold, and heard with indescribable feeling of loneliness, his own 'Home Sweet Home' played in a rich man's parlor. His song was published, but it profited Payne only as a matter of reputation." Buyer agrees to pay the calculated amount of shipping. We reserve the right to ship UPS/FedEx instead of Parcel Select.
