Description: I AM OFFERING THE FOLLOWING FOR SALE: FRESH FROM A LOCAL MAINE ESTATE ABOUT 50 MILES FROM BANGOR MAINE AND NEAR PENOBSCOT NATION Here's what I know about Flo Shay's baskets: She was the premier Penobscot basket weaver of the 1920's and 1930's. It is very rare to be able to identify the work of a known weaver from this time period, but Flo Shay's baskets are unique. The way I understand the background, Ms. Shay was able to obtain a supply of large, fancy glass vases from an impoverished storekeeper during the Great Depression. These vases were pink, green, or clear, and this is a green one. All of these vases have faceted sides which can be felt under the weave. Ms. Shay wove basket overlays around the vases, and her handiwork is beautiful. Her vases always have two coiled ring handles, fancy weaves in ash splints and cording, and a sweetgrass rim on both the lip and on the underside. Gorgeous and unusual work! The basket is a nice size. It measures 8 1/2" tall and is about 7" across the handles. This beautiful basket is in great shape for its age. It just has one small section of damage (see photo) both handles are still firmly attached, and every rim wrap both top and bottom is intact. The underlying vase is also in perfect shape with no cracks or chips. Amazing! See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's features and condition. This is an attractive older Penobscot Native American basket by a known weaver, and it will make a stunning addition to someone's collection. Please email me with any questions.
