Description: This authentic antique cream pitcher, made by Sellew & Company in the mid-19th century, is a beautiful addition to any collection of historical American pewter. Its baluster shape and pewter material give it a classic feel. The pitcher has baluster body raised on circular base and curved ornate handle. It was made by Sellew & Company, of Cincinnati, Ohio a firm owned by Sellew brothers: William, Osman and Enos. The firm produced tea and coffee pots along with plates lamps, communion wares of excellent quality and metal. Many of their earlier design items were taken from the Boardman's. Sellew & Company was the oldest company that produced pewter and Britannia metal wares in Cincinnati, Ohio. They were active between 1832-1860. It is also worth to note that their works can be found in many private collections and museums such as Metropolitan Museum of Art, Winterthur Museum or Dayton Art Institute. The maker's mark is shown on the underside, and the pitcher stands 5 1/4" high (5 3/4" with handle). It shows subtle, age-appropriate wear along with a beautiful patina, from normal, responsible use.
