Description: Antique French Gilded Bronze Medal Bas-Relief, Charity, Signed, WWI Both sides of this antique French gilded bronze medal are designed in bas-relief. The front shows a woman giving alms to a poor family. The back shows a wreath of oak and laurel branches surrounding the words “Ville d’Agen. Œuvres de la guerre 1914. Mme C. Trouille ”. This medal is signed “Ch. Pillet” and “A. Desaide Edit.”. Charles Pillet (1869-1960), French medal designer, Prix de Rome in 1890, won awards at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in1900. Alphonse Desaide (1851-1904), was a French medal designer and medal publisher in Paris. The medal is also signed “Arthus-Bertrand”, the name of a manufacturer of flags, insignias, and military and civilian medals. Founded in the 19th century, the Arthus-Bertrand company still exists today in Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood in Paris, near the famous Deux Magots Café. The edge is marked with the word “Bronze” along with the maker’s mark of the founder. In very good condition with the exception of faint scratches and lovely aged patina, this medal will add a be an authentic addition to your collection!
