Description: Welcome to Pioneer Fossils!A Certificate of Authenticity, which has a color photo of the exact item you purchased on it, will accompany the specimen. Plus a custom-made steel stand. Here is a genuine partial fossil bone of a Gastralia from an Apatosaurus. It measures about 3.42" (87mm). A Gastralia is a bone found in some animals, including Apatosaurus. They provided support for the abdomen and abdominal muscles. In this specimen, the lateral bump near one end is a sign of arthritis suffered by the animal. Apatosaurus (meaning "deceptive lizard"), one of the larger members of the clade called Sauropods, roamed over some areas in western North America during the Jurassic Period, about 151 million years ago. It could grow to 75 feet in length. This specimen is from the Morrison Formation in Colorado. It was named "deceptive lizard" because some of its bones were originally confused with Mosasaur bones. This was glued together at the digging site, using Star Bond or Paleo Bond. This is not considered damage. In fact, the vast majority of dinosaur bones on display in museums were once glued together in like manner.Sauropods were huge animals that walked on 4 sturdy pillar-like legs. They had very long necks, small heads, long tails and were plant-eaters. The animal on the Sinclair gas logo is of a Sauropod. Apatosaurus is one of the most popular of the Sauropods, along with such genera as Brontosaurus (yes, it is a recognized genus again), Brachiosaurus, and Diplodocus For years, many thought Brontosaurus and Apatosaurus were the same genus, but recent comparisons have shown Apatosaurus to be much larger, with a thicker, lower set neck, with some skull differences as well. Named in 1877 by Charles Marsh, Apatosaurus fossils are found in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico and Oklahoma, and a few in Montana. Apatosaurus are in a number of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies. We invite you to visit our store. COMBINED SHIPPING: We make every effort to combine shipping costs and we refund any overpayment back to you, on the same day we ship the item. We have given hundreds of partial refunds for combined shipping savings. We will do our best to combine purchases to save shipping costs. In some cases, that is easy, in some cases, not as much. Our items are of vastly different sizes and weights, but we never use shipping as a profit center. We would rather refund the shipping overpayment back to you. We are happy to enclose a COA (Certificate of Authenticity). Some words of caution about COA’s: Do not let them become a substitute for learning about the specimens. We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA’s, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. A COA should be specific to one particular specimen, with a photo of the exact item on it. At Pioneer Fossils, our fossils and minerals come with a COA, and each have a photo of the exact item you just purchased. This assures that the COA can never be transferred to a different specimen. ****************************************************************************************************************************************** IMPORTANT: If you are not satisfied with your order, please contact us, and let us make it right, before giving any feedback.
