This is an original hand-colored print - #229 - from the royal octavo first edition of John James Audubon's Birds of America, published 1840-1844. Lithographed, printed, and colored by J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia, 1840-44. The first octavo edition was produced under the direct supervision of John James Audubon and features strictly hand-coloring. The credits are in italics, as required. Includes a facsimile of the title page of volume 4, from which print 229 was taken, showingthe publication date of 1842. (Publication for each of the seven volumes was staggered over 4 years, from 1841-1844. Vol 4 contained plates 211-280.)
