Volume 4 LEGENDARY PERFORMERS Fats Domino A MAN AND HIS MUSIC ANTOINE "FATS" DOMINO: A MAN AND HIS MUSIC Easily compared with the likes of Thomas "Fats" Waller, Ferdinand "Jelly-Roll" Morton and the great barrel house musicians of the twenties and thirties, Antoine "Fats" Domino was the most successful singer - songwriter in the history of recorded music. He held this position until Paul McCartney superceded him in the late 1960's. From a family of jazz musicians, Domino, a New Orleans native, began to play the piano when he was five years old. By the time he was ten he was performing with his first professional band. As his reputation and popularity spread, Imperial Records A&R representative Dave Bartholomew signed him to a recording contract and co-wrote with him the first of many song hits in a biographical ditty entitled "The Fat Man." This 1950 release reached the top ten on the R&B charts. With the acceptance of rock and roll music in the mid-1950s, Fats Domino became a major influence in popular music. Examples of the Domino - Bartholomew songwriting magic are numerous. Elvis Presley had a major hit in his rendering "One Night." Ricky Nelson's version of "I'm Walking" helped him in his quest to rival "The King" (Presley). Pat Boone had a major cover hit with "Ain't That A Shame." Gale Storm hit the number two spot with her recording of "I Hear You Knocking" in 1955; in 1961 Fats' own recording also hit that position. Bobby Darin's recording of "Blue Monday" was looked upon as one of his best efforts. In 1955 Fats Domino's recording of "Ain't That A Shame" reached the number ten Position on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the next nine years Domino had no less than 65 chart hits. Major compositions included "I'm In Love Again" "I Want To Walk You Home," "Whole Lotta Loving" and "Walking To New Orleans." His remakes of "My Blue Heaven," "Red Sails In The Sunset," "When The Saints Go Marching In" and "Blueberry Hill" can only be viewed as pop music classics. It was half a decade between the Fats Domino rendering of "Red Sails In The Sunset" and his legendary interpretation of the John Lennon - Paul McCartney composition "Lady Madonna" and yet another ten years to his country music chart hit "Whiskey Heaven."
