Though technically their second album, it's the first to feature the classic lineup of Pete Ham, Tom Evans, Mike Gibbins and new guitarist Joey Molland. Peaking at No. 28 in the US (none of their albums charted in the UK!), it was their highest charting album. "I Can't Take It" - The album kicks off with a straight-ahead Pete Ham rocker. "I Don't Mind" - A lovely Evans-Molland ballad, glorious harmonies. "Love Me Do" - A great rock 'n' roll song, but it didn't do anything to stop the Beatles comparisons when Molland titles his song with the same title as the Fab Four's first single! "Midnight Caller" - A lovely Pete Ham ballad. "No Matter What" - Another Pete Ham song, and the only single released from the album. (Peaked at No. 8.) "Without You" - Co-written by Ham and Evans. Could have been a huge single, and it was...for Harry Nilsson, who also won a Grammy for it. "Blodwyn" - This is one of my favorite songs, although I have no idea why a spoon would be "a token of my love." Ham's guitar work gives this song a distinctive country feel. "Better Days" - Another Evans/Molland collaboration. "It Had To Be" - Drummer Mike Gibbins is the underappreciated songwriter of the band. This is a lovely tune. "Watford John" - This little rocker is credited to the entire band. "Believe Me" - A wonderful Evans-penned ballad. "We're For the Dark" - A classic Pete Ham song which closed the original album on a somber note with its acoustic guitar. Best line: "But it's not enough to be/ If you gotta look, then you have to see." Then there are the five bonus tracks. [The final three were produced for a follow-up album to NO DICE that was never released. "Get Down" - A rocker written by the entire band. "Friends Are Hard To Find" - Another rocker penned by Molland. [Again he references the Beatles with the opening line: "Well, I had to laugh, I saw the photograph."} "Mean Mean Jemima" - Molland contributed this mid-tempo rocker. "Loving You" - Another gem from Gibbins. "I'll Be the One" - A final band collaboration and easily the best of the bonus tracks. With this album and its follow-up, 1971's STRAIGHT UP, Badfinger were establishing their own identity as a band and were poised for greatness. Tragically, it never happened. Label changes and bad business decisions and mismanagement saw declining record sales. "Baby Blue" and "Day After Day" from STRAIGHT UP would be their final Top 40 hits. WISH YOU WERE HERE only reached No. 148. By 1975 a despondent Pete Ham took his own life and brought a premature end to one of the most gifted bands of the era. This album serves as a testament to that greatness. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Track Listings 1. I Can't Take It 2. I Don't Mind 3. Love Me Do 4. Midnight Caller 5. No Matter What 6. Without You 7. Blodwyn 8. Better Days 9. It Had to Be 10. Watford John 11. Believe Me 12. We're for the Dark 13. Get Down [*] 14. Friends Are Hard to Find [*] 15. Mean Mean Jemima [*] 16. Loving You [*] 17. I'll Be the One [*] ASS - While Badfinger's Straight Up and No Dice albums are widely and deservedly considered classics, their Apple swan song, "Ass" gets so little attention that it's never even been released domestically. Few people outside the core of die-hard fans even know it exists. Too bad, because they're missing some stellar moments. While power-pop was the buzzword that surrounded much of the rest of the band's catalog, "Ass" doesn't come off quite as sweet and is all the better for it. "Ass" was Badfinger stretching out and showing that they were more than recycled Beatle hooks and harmonies. While "Apple Of My Eye", Ham's achingly appropriate tip of the hat to the band's soon to be ex-label, captures the band's sound of old, several of the other songs seem to come from a harder edged, refreshingly different vein. "Timeless" is quite possibly Pete Ham's finest recorded moment with it's slow-building intensity, harrowing guitar and fade to infinity ending, and if nothing else shows just how huge a talent the world lost a short time later. Pete was not only a gifted songwriter, but as this song also shows, a brilliant guitarist. These two songs along with "Constitution", "Icicles", "Blind Owl" and "I Can Love You" are the albums undoubted highlights, but only Mike Gibbins' "Cowboy" seems out of place on the album. Despite it's thrown together, admittedly rushed feel, Ass is a great Badfinger album that has never received a fair shake. It's nice to see this import only re-release for those who missed it the first time around, but I have my doubts as to whether this will wake people up to what they've been missing. Again, too bad. Track Listings Disc: 1 1. Apple Of My Eye 2. Get Away 3. Icicles 4. Winner 5. Blind Owl 6. Constitution 7. When I Say 8. Cowboy 9. I Can Love You 10. Timeless TOMORROW - Japanese miniature paper sleeve reissue of 1969 album with 4 bonus tracks TBA and not listed here. Essentially the same as Badfinger, the Iveys landed on the Beatles' Apple label in late 1968 after the Beatles' personal assistant, Mal Evans, encouraged them to submit tapes to Paul McCartney. Their bright, melodic, and harmony-filled pop/rock sound immediately drew comparisons to the Beatles and to the work of McCartney in particular. Drummer Mike Gibbins once described The Iveys as a hard little combo - meaning they liked to rock and he was right. Their style was an amalgam and thus difficult to pigeonhole by the label bigwigs who think they know best (they usually don't). This CD features four bonus tracks which only enhance the variety of the music. The song "I've Been Waiting" is a true rocker while "Maybe Tomorrow" is a ballad that should have been a bigger hit. It's also notable that this original lineup had a more lustrous sound as it pertains to their complex harmonies. No disrespect to Joey Molland but Ron Griffiths' voice was a better match with Ham and Evans. Track Listings Disc: 1 1. See-Saw, Granpa 2. Beautiful And Blue 3. Dear Angie 4. Think About The Good Times 5. Yesterday Ain't Coming Back 6. Fisherman 7. Maybe Tomorrow 8. Sali Bloo 9. Angelique 10. I'm In Love 11. They're Knocking Down Our Home MAGIC CHRISTIAN MUSIC - Japanese Limited Edition in an LP-STYLE Slipcase. Includes Two Bonus Tracks Not on the Original Release: 'storm in a Teacup', and 'arthur'. Though technically their 2nd album, this was the first after they changed their name from The Iveys. What a great disc! 3 songs from the Peter Seller/Ringo Starr film THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN (hence the title) include Paul McCartney's classic "Come And Get It" (see BEATLES ANTHOLOGY 3 to hear HIM singing it first) as well as the wildly frenetic "Rock Of All Ages" and the sentimental "Carry On To Tomorrow". And that's only the start! Other highlights for me are "Crimson Ship", "Beautiful And Blue" and the emotional "Maybe Tomorrow" (the latter 2 originally from their 1st album). This CD contains all 14 tracks from the British LP ("Angelique" and "Give It A Try" had been snipped off the US LP) as well as "Storm In A Teacup" (taken from a rare Ice Cream promo EP) and the previously-unreleased, humorous look at marital infidelity, "Arthur". If I have any beef, it's that they didn't go far enough! MAGIC CHRISTIAN MUSIC was really a patched-together album, 6 tracks having appeared earlier on MAYBE TOMORROW. If they were going to do a CD with bonus tracks, I'd like to see the other 6 songs, plus the leftover "A" & "B" sides (not to mention the demo for "Come And Get It") --all of which appeared earlier on the RARE TRACKS lp-- in one place. Among the missing was the ominous epic, "I've Been Waiting", which closed their 1st LP. Don't get me wrong, this is a FANTASTIC CD as it is! You'd think after all these years, though, that somebody would take the extra effort to REALLY do things "right". Track Listings Disc: 1 1. Come And Get It 2. Crimson Ship 3. Dear Angie 4. Fisherman 5. Midnight Sun 6. Beautiful And Blue 7. Rock Of All Ages 8. Carry On Till Tomorrow 9. I'm In Love 10. Walk Out In The Rain 11. Angelique 12. Knocking Down Our Home 13. Give It A Try 14. Maybe Tomorrow STRAIGHT UP - Japanese Limited Edition in an LP-STYLE Slipcase. Includes Six Bonus Tracks Not on the Original Release: 'money', 'flying', 'name of the Game', 'suitcase', 'perfection', and 'baby Blue'. Every track from this rich, warm LP blows you away. Everything from Pete Ham's and George Harrison's slide guitars on "Day After Day" to Ham's hauntingly aching "Take It All." Every rock and pop fan should pick this CD up before it slips out of print. Badfinger initially were on the Beatles' Apple Records label before they moved to Warner Brothers in 1973/74. Every album recorded by this incredibly gifted band is worth it - "Magic Christian Music," "No Dice" (which ties with "Straight Up" as the best LP, "Ass," "Badfinger," "Wish You Were Here" and "Head First." Any fan of the Beatles, The Who, Hendrix, Cream/Clapton and everyone else from the late 1960s/early 1970s should pick up Badfinger's discs. This was the band that Rolling Stone magazine said, in 1970, is the group "to watch for" in the coming years. It's a shame their manager, S. Polly, was such a thief and robbed the band of royalties and potential fame, which concluded with Ham's suicide in 1975 and bassist Tom Evans' suicide in 1983. Drummer MIke Gibbons, sadly, passed away late last year, leaving only guitarist-vocalist Joey Molland as the band's sole survivor. Rest in peace guys! P.S. Don't be turned off by The Beatles comparisons - Badfinger had a sound, song structures and style all to their own, which will please both fans of The Beatles and those who don't care for the Fab Four. Power pop-rock was never better than the early 1970s records from Badfinger. (Actually, Badfinger's output was as good as most of the solo Beatles work in the early 1970s.) Track Listings 1. Take It All 2. Baby Blue 3. Money 4. Flying 5. I'd Die Babe 6. Name of the Game 7. Suitcase 8. Sweet Tuesday Morning 9. Day After Day 10. Sometimes 11. Perfection 12. It's Over 13.
